Different competitions

As well as the competitions that are familiar to us, unusual competitions are also held in Wales and Patagonia.

Barrel race

On July 28th each year, to celebrate the Festival of the Landing (Gŵyl y Glaniad), a barrel race is held in Puerto Madryn. This is a relay race between two teams, with one team representing the native Indians and the other representing the Welsh settlers. There are six members in each team and they have to move a cart with a barrel on it along two squares. This represents the efforts of the first settlers to carry water in 200-litre barrels pulled by horses to the Cave Peninsula.

Trevelin Andean Festival

Since 2008 Trevelin has held an Andean Festival, that features countryside traditions and the customs of the gauchos. The weekend includes a number of different activities, such as a rodeo competition (with cash prizes), a cockerel race and a children’s rodeo. It’s an opportunity for people to demonstrate their riding skills.
